APWU National Convention 2024

Starting July 11 and running to July 18 the 2024 APWU National Convention will be in progress. Almost all of the Nashville Local 5 leadership is going to be in attendance visiting the myriad of classes provided. Most importantly this convention is when the APWU will debate and vote on proposals for the next two years! Be sure to talk to your stewards when we get back to learn more about what we did and if you are interested in going next year be sure to attend our Monthly Meetings as any union member can be a delegate to these important events.

Improving our skills with Arbitation School.

  • May 5 to May 10: Arbitration School
    • This year we are sending Steven Simms, Clerk Craft Director, and Jerry Bennet, Vice-President, to one of the most difficult schools we can attend - Arbitation School. This training is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of the techniques needed to effectively prepare a case for arbitration. Curriculum includes: Introduction to Arbitration; Preparing the Case; Identifying and Framing Issues; Threshold Issues; Exhibits and Stipulations; Opening and Closing Statements; Rules of Evidence; Objections, and Direct and Cross Examinations. Taught by current and retired national officers Steven and Jerry will come back ready to take our contract disputes all the way to national.
    • It looks like Arbitration school is going very well this year. You can see here APWU President Mark Dimondstein with Steven Simms (left) and Jerry Bennet (right) during one of the short breaks they get during class!

Can't find your Union Steward in April? Don't worry! We are still here but several of us are going to be out of town during parts of April for training.

  • April 8 - 10: Tri-State Convention
    • Many of us are heading down to Chattanooga to attend classes with our fellow Union brothers and sisters from all over Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. At this yearly convetion our National Business Agents will be there teaching us different aspects of our duties and keeping us up to date on the lastest disputes they are working on and winning for us on the National level.
  • April 21 - 26 PLUSS
    • Later in April we will be attending either the basic or advanced classes of the Postal Labor Unions Summer School. We learned a lot about basic grievance handeling last year and are excited to continue our training and to get our newer stewards into the basic classes as well.

If you need any help and you can't find your normal steward please reach out to our ever dilligent Union President, Keith (Big Country) Pullen or any of your Craft Directors. Just grab anyone you can! We are all happy to help you out with whatever you need.

Machine Relocation / Removal Teams

On May 9, 2023, the APWU was notified that the Postal Service intends to develop teams of volunteer maintenance craft employees to perform the removals and/or relocations of mail processing equipment, in conjunction with their 10 Year Plan. Maintenance Division resident officers immediately met with the Postal Service to discuss this project and relay our concerns. While we are pleased that this work will remain in-house, and not be subcontracted, other areas of concern remain.

More information about this move can be found on the Nashville APWU Maitenance webpage.

Grievance Settlements 2020 Settlements

I just wanted to show everyone the grievance settlements for the whole state of Tennessee for 2020 between all Crafts.

As you all can see our Local #5 Nashville have settled the most grievance payouts. Our Local you can see has about 80% of all settlements. This just shows all the hard work your Union Stewards and Officers are working for you. This just shows that everyone should be in the Union because it shows all the hard work and dedication our Local #5 does for everyone.

We had such a great year 2020 and so far this year the numbers have not slowed down. Upper Management has noticed all the payouts we have been getting and are upset because so far this year we will beat 2020. This is one reason why we have had so many conversions this year for PSE’s making FTR’s, and in some cases making FTR within weeks of getting hired.

If you want to know who is not in the Union ask a Steward/Officer and we will tell you so you can talk to the Non Members about joining the Union.

Thank you to everyone for trusting your Local #5 Stewards/Officers.

Congratulations PSE’s!!!

50 more PSE’s are being Converted to FTR no later than 5/21/2021.

This is unheard of, conversions right after your 90 day probation.

All the grievances that have been filed in Nashville we have finally won and we should have our staffing issues fixed.

Thank you,

Keith Pullen

I have filed a Grievance for the Ice and Snow event which happened in February.  I need as many statements from you that you were unable to make it to work.  If you did not report to work during the ice and snow and requested Administrative Leave, I need statements from you.  I also need any pictures that you took, that show you were unable to make it to work.  The ELM states that you must make a diligent attempt to report to work.  The dates were from February 14th thru the 21st.  You can e-mail and statements or pictures to me at eggersdmvp@gmail.com.
The 15th was the Holiday.  If you noticed that you were not paid for the Holiday and you called in for the date, you should file a grievance with Joe Jolley.  He will not know to file a grievance for you if you do not contact him.
